2020 IRONMAN African Championship in Port Elizabeth sold out

Port Elizabeth - IRONMAN South Africa, a Wanda Sports Group company, announced that the IRONMAN African Championship is sold out. The triathlon event will take place on Sunday, 29 March 2020 in Nelson Mandela Bay.

This following the Long Distance and Short Distance (individuals) format of the Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge powered by Algoa FM also being sold out.

“This comes as no surprise, we knew the excitement was there. Both the IRONMAN African Championship and Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge powered by Algoa FM individual entries are sold out. Athletes and corporates can still be part of the weekend’s festivities by getting a team together. Limited team entries are available for the Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge powered by Algoa FM,” says Keith Bowler, Managing Director of IRONMAN South Africa.

While most of the athletes taking part in the IRONMAN African Championship are from the host country, competitors from 58 nations will toe the starting line at Hobie Beach. Female participation is at 20 percent, showing the growing number of women in the sport of triathlon, “We have over 1 800 entries with 351 of these being female athletes.

"The Women for Tri programme has done a great job in supporting local triathlon clubs as they develop programming and activities to increase female participation in triathlon. I have no doubt that our female athlete numbers will grow by even more next year,” added Bowler.

The IRONMAN events will continue live event coverage on Facebook Watch via the IRONMAN Now® Facebook Page for the third straight year, featuring 19 events from around the world in 2020. As the number of events receiving Facebook Watch live coverage has increased each year, so too have the fans tuning in.

Over the past two years, more than 5.3 million people have watched at least one minute of an IRONMAN live event broadcast on Facebook.

Available globally to fans on Facebook, the 19 events covered this season will come from 12 different countries and four continents with coverage including the IRONMAN African Championship event, showcasing Nelson Mandela Bay to millions around the world.

The IRONMAN African Championship professional athlete start list is looking strong with the 2019 IRONMAN World Championship winner in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Anne Haug from Germany, set to take on two-time IRONMAN African Championship defending champion (2018; 2019), Lucy Charles-Barclay.

The South African professional triathletes, Annah Watkinson, Natia van Heerden and Mariella Sawyer will be hot on their heels to upset the apple cart.

While the South African men, Kyle Buckingham, James Cunnama and 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa winner, Matt Trautman, will be hoping to upset the prominent athletes in the likes of Sebastian Kienle from Germany, Matt Russel from U.S.A, Andreas Dreitz from Germany, and Nils Frommhold from Germany.

“I'm excited to head back to Port Elizabeth. I’ve never really had the race that I feel I’m capable of there, so I hope to change that this year and put out a performance I can be proud of in front of the home crowd. I think last year’s IRONMAN African Championship race was one of the most competitive IRONMAN races outside of the [IRONMAN] World Championship event in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i. From what I’ve heard so far, this year looks much the same.

"It’s an easy trip for the Europeans and lots of guys are keen to get their IRONMAN World Championship qualification done early. I expect it will continue to attract a stellar field which is great for the spectators and is a true test against the world’s best,” said Matt Trautman, professional triathlete.
