"Critical blood shortages is synonymous with winter.  Colds and flu are often to blame since one cannot donate blood if you are sick," SANBS said.

"Our younger donors are busy with exams and then they will enjoy the winter holiday with blood donation last on the to-do list.  The most common challenge in winter:  “it is too cold to put my nose out the door’ L.

"We hope that our #winterishere gift – which will not be revealed to keep you in suspense – will be useful in addressing this common challenge."

Why is regular blood donation important?

  1. To improve blood stock by collecting more blood.  Did you know that if all blood donors donated blood every 8 weeks, we would rarely have a blood shortage?
  2. To ensure we are able to supply hospitals with a bigger product mix:
  3. Quality Plasma Program - Plasma has a shelf life of one year.  Plasma will not be issued for transfusion if a donor has not returned for a subsequent blood donation for re-testing.  If a donor does not return within a year, the Plasma component cannot be issued for normal transfusion.  It is then sent to the National Bio Products Institute (NBI) where other specialized pharmaceutical products are produced.
  4. A Pooled Platelet product is made up by pooling Platelets from 5 different donors with the same blood group.  Best practice dictates that Platelets can only be pooled from regular blood donors.  So without sufficient regular donors, we often experience shortages of Pooled Platelet products.  A regular donor is someone who donates at least 4 times in a 24 month period.
