One arrested after opening fire on witnesses to a gang-related shooting

The relentless hunt for two alleged attempted murder suspects paid off when one was arrested hours after a shooting incident in Japhta Street, in Booysens Park, Port Elizabeth.

According to police information, on Friday, at about 17:00, the two victims were standing in a back yard in Nortjie Street when they noticed the two suspects walking in Japhta Street.

"Both suspects are known to the victims (both 21 years old). One of the suspects pulled out a firearm and fired shots at a rival gang member’s house," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"When the complainant shouted at them, shots were then fired in their direction.

"One victim was shot in his leg while the other escaped unscathed."

She said that soon after the shooting, members of the Visible Gang Intervention Team flooded the area in pursuit of the suspects.

"About four hours later, one suspect  (38 years) was arrested at his house in Vastrap. One suspect is still outstanding."

Col Naidu said that the suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday, on two charges of attempted murder.
