While on their way to work on Sunday, two members from the Visible Gang Intervention Team  arrested two carjacking suspects in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth.

According to the 30-year-old complainant, at about 14:55 on Sunday, he was sitting in his car in Booysens Park Drive waiting for his friend, who was at the ATM.

"He alleged that he was approached by an unknown male who threatened him with a firearm," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"He was ordered to get out of the vehicle and his cellphone and cash was taken."

She said that the hijacked vehicle’s registration number was simulcast on the radio channels and it was reported that another police vehicle had spotted the VW Polo in Standford Road, Port Elizabeth.

"The members were in close proximity of the suspected vehicle and at about 15:15, a number of police vehicles had blocked off the suspected hijackers, who were forced to stop," Col Naidu said.

"The two suspects, aged 18 and 30 years old ,got off and started running in different directions. The two members chased after them in their vehicle and managed to apprehend them.

"One suspect produced a firearm which was later identified as a toy gun."

She said that the suspects were detained on charges of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen vehicle.

They will appear in court on Tuesday.
