Uitenhage businesswoman robbed by armed men in her home

Police in Uitenhage have warned home owners in the wake of a house robbery incident, which allegedly took place on Thursday night.

"On Thursday, at around 6pm, it is alleged that a homeowner of a house in Jobela Street, KwaNobuhle, in Uitenhage, heard someone knocking and simultaneously opening a kitchen door," said police spokesperson, Sgt Majola Nkohli.

"A homeowner, who is also a businesswoman, alleged that three men all armed with firearms stormed into the house and held her at gunpoint.

"The suspects ransacked the house and stole undisclosed amount of cash and two cellphones before fleeing in a white bakkie that was parked outside with a driver (fourth suspect)."

A case of house robbery was opened for investigation.

"Police are urging house owners, especially business people, not to keep cash either in business or private premises, so as to discourage robberies," said Sgt Nkohli.

"It also assist to install security gates in all house doors and keep them locked, so as to increase security measures." 

In a separate incident, on Thursday, at around 5:30pm, it is alleged that two men, one armed with a firearm, robbed a spaza shop in Mwahla Street, KwaNobuhle.

"Suspects allegedly stole undisclosed amount of cash, airtime vouchers, cigaretts and a cellphone before fleeing in a blue Ford Fiesta. Police are investigating a case of business robbery," described Sgt Nkohli.

"No people were injured in both incidents and the suspects are still at large.

"Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects in any of the two incidents is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Andile Gusha at 082 441 8139."
