People living with disabilities invited to exhibition of sport

The George Municipality in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch's disabled sport section (Maties Parasport) are inviting the people in the community of George who are living with disabilities to an exhibition of sports specifically for disabled people.

"The organisations are hosting an exhibition on sports for people living with disabilities on Saturday, 14th of July 2018 at 10:00 at the Conville Civic Centre," says George Municipality Spokesperson, Debra Sauer.

"The Sport Development Section of the Municipality, in its endeavour to make sport facilities accessible to those living with disabilities, have embarked on a project called Access-ABILITY to Sport.

"Their aim is to make the facilities accessible to disabled athletes as well as to expose those who have never had the opportunity to play sport due to a disability, to a variety of sports."

Sauer said that the Maties Parasport group will demonstrate how to play the disable-friendly sport codes on the day.

"Some of the sports include, Goal ball (for blind people), quad rugby (which are played in wheelchairs), Bocce ball (like bowling) and blind cricket," she added.

"This event aims to bring exposure to the community in anticipation of a sports day for people living with disabilities, that will be taking place on 14 September 2018. The Sports Day is themed - STARTING A NEW HERITAGE IN SPORT DEVELOPMENT as part of the Municipalities Heritage Month celebrations."

The sports day in September will take place at the Rosemoor stadium. For more information please contact Jonique Claasen-Gozongo or Agnes Mntuyedwa on 044 801 6346 or 044 802 2009.
