Two appear in Humansdorp court following R75 000 abalone bust

Two men appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for possession of 50 kilograms of abalone worth R75 000.

"Edwin Wait (51) and Riaan Smit (49) appeared at the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of illegally poached abalone," said police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"Smit was denied bail and to remain in custody, while Wait was released on R3 000 bail."

He said that their case was remanded to Wednesday, 18 July for further investigation.

"The two men were arrested on Tuesday, at around 12:30pm, by the Jeffreys Bay SAPS in partnership with Dark Water Ops Anti-Poaching Unit at Waterkant Street near the beach in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay," said Sgt Nkohli.

"It is believed that the two suspects were arrested after the team acted on information of possible poaching of abalone at the beach."

Police subsequently seized 475 abalone (50 kilograms) worth R75 000.
