Drugs worth R5 million seized on bus in King Williams Town

Resolute in their fight to tackle drugs in communities, the East London K9 Unit, Organised Crime and Provincial Tracking Team arrested a 39-year-old suspect for possession of drugs in King Williams Town on Tuesday.

"The members followed the information they received about a male, who was aboard a bus with drugs to Johannesburg. They stopped the bus on the corner of R346 and Engineer Terrance, in King Williams Town, and searched it and the male tried to get rid of a black plastic that was in front of him," said police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

"The Police members got suspicious and searched him and recovered 1 573 mandrax tablets, crack raw cocaine weighing 8.92kg and TIK weighing 7.350kg to the street value of more than R5 million.

"The suspect was immediately arrested and charged for possession of drugs."

He will appear at King Williams Town Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga applauded the excellent co-ordination and teamwork, which led to the speedy arrest and recovery of the drugs.

"We are coming after these criminals involved in drug trafficking. The Eastern Cape is no haven for their drug activities and we will squeeze their space so that they are forced to ply their illicit trade elsewhere. Communities are urged to be actively involved with the police and together we will  win the war against drugs," she added.
