25-year-old accused of raping 77-year-old woman remanded in custody

The 25-year-old man accused of raping a 77-year-old woman appeared before the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"He was not asked to plead to the charge of rape," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha..

"The case against the accused was postponed to Monday next week for further investigation.

"He was remanded in custody as he was not granted bail.

"The accused cannot be identified until he pleads to the charge of rape."

The Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) arrested the 25-year-old.

"It is alleged that the victim was sleeping at her home on Wednesday, at about 23:00, at Thongwana Locality, Mthulu Village, Butterworth.

"The suspect  is alleged to have kicked the door of the room where the victim was in deep slumber. He then accosted her and she was overpowered by the suspect," said Captain Manatha.

"It is then that the suspect allegedly raped her.

"A case of rape was registered at Butterworth Police Station. Butterworth FCS Unit investigated the case and arrested the suspect on Friday 10 August 2018 at Thongwana Locality, Mthulu Village, Butterworth."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the alleged rape of an elderly person and abuse of women and children.  

He has welcomed the arrest of the suspect and congratulated Butterworth FCS Unit investigators for their swift actions in tracing and arresting the perpetrator.
