Man accused of killing his 88-year-old mother remanded in custody

A 55-year-old man briefly appeared before Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday morning after he allegedly killed his 88-year-old mother.

Mvuyisi Mahamba faces a charge of murder.

"The accused was not asked to plead," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The case against the accused was postponed to Tuesday for a social worker’s report.

"The accused remained in custody."

It is alleged that Mahamba and his mother had a misunderstanding at their home on Friday, after 21:00, at Emntla Locality, Ngcwazi Village, Ngqamakhwe, said Captain Manatha.

"The suspect is alleged to have used an sharp object to fatally wound his mother on the night in question.

"The grandchildren only noticed in the early hours of Saturday that their grandmother had passed away."

Captain Manatha said that the suspect has been charged with murder and will appear before the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Nogem Mahamba aged 88.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the senseless murder.

"This is unacceptable more especially during a time which we all have come together as stakeholders to celebrate women’s month," he said.

He commended the members of Ngqamakhwe Police for their swift actions in arresting the suspect.
