Dagga worth R1.6 million seized following police car chase in Paterson

Police in Paterson arrested two male suspects, aged 29 and 34 years old, on Tuesday night on the R342 between Paterson and Addo for dealing in dagga.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, this followed after Paterson police members on patrol spotted a suspicious silver grey Opel Zaphira with a trailer at 22:30 on the R342.

"When the members turned their vehicle around, the Opel sped away fast from the members."

Captain Beetge said that the suspects attempted to run away, but the police chased the vehicle.

After a few kilometres, they managed to pull off the vehicle and searched it.

"In the trailer as well as in the vehicle, 29 bags of dagga were found.

"The total weight was 640 kilograms of dagga with estimated street value of about R1,6 million," he described.

The suspects were charged for dealing in dagga and will appear before the Alexandria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Motherwell SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, applauded the arrests and confiscation.

He added "the roads leading in and out of Nelson Mandela Metro will be the focus of SAPS in the lead up towards the festive season.

"Operation 'Quiet Storm' will be looking for stolen property, illegal firearms, illegal drugs and substances, stolen stock and stolen vehicles. Perpetrators using these roads will face the full force of the law."
