Hijackers steal booze worth over R100 000 from delivery truck

Port Elizabeth police on Friday morning recovered an emptied and abandoned beer delivery truck at Zwide after it was apparently hijacked in Walmer township.

According to the police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, the truck was hijacked by four suspects armed with three firearms at about 07:00am.

It is alleged that the armed suspects pounced on the driver and his four assistants as they were about to make a delivery.

"They were forced by the suspects at gunpoint to get into a blue Toyota Quantum, which was blocking the road."

Apparently their cellphones were taken and they were then ordered to lie flat inside the quantum that was driven by the suspects.

"The suspects then drove around with them for about an hour before letting them get out of the vehicle in a bushy area near Despatch," Capt Beetge said.

Fortunately, for the driver and his assistants, their cellphones were returned to them and they were left unharmed.

Missing Beer crates

The suspects even gave back the driver and his assistants their phones - perhaps as a measure of ensuring that they will not be tracked down.

Beetge said that after getting their phones back, the driver contacted the police.

Police later recovered the truck with about 800 crates of beer, worth more than R100 000 missing.

"Any person that could assist police in this investigation can contact their closest police station or phone 08600 10111."
