A 36-year-old murder and attempted murder suspect was arrested immediately after three men were shot at a tavern in Walmer Location, Port Elizabeth, over the weekend.

According to police information, it is alleged that on Saturday, at about 16:50, the men were watching the Bafana Bafana-Nigeria football match when they started arguing among themselves.

"The suspect who was not part of the group started to shoot at them," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"Ayanda Jamta, 24, was shot through the left side of his back and died at the scene while his friends, a 27-year-old male was wounded in his shoulder and the other, age unknown, was shot several times on his body.

"The suspect then ran away."

Col Naidu said that SAPS Walmer member’s quick response led to the arrest of the suspect.

"Police noticed a suspicious person running and on stopping him, he was found in possession of a revolver," she added.

"The revolver was reported stolen in a housebreaking case in Walmer earlier this month."

The suspect has been detained on a charge of murder and two cases of attempted murder and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
