A 23-year-old Port Elizabeth student is expected in court on Monday after he was detained on a charge of murder after he allegedly killed one of the men, who had robbed him in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"It is alleged that at about 05:30, the student was walking home when he was approached by the two suspects at the corners of Mackay and Campbell Streets in Central, Port Elizabeth," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"One suspect was armed with a knife."

She said that the student was robbed of his cellphone.

"The student apparently grabbed the knife from the suspect and allegedly stabbed him," Col Naidu said.

"The other suspect, aged 25, was arrested by a patrolling security vehicle and was detained."

She said that the student was also detained on a charge of murder.

"Both suspects are expected to appear in court soon."
