Policeman injured during shootout with suspects at Cala business burglary

Police are in Queenstown are searching for suspects, who attacked police officers during a Cala business burglary in the early hours of Wednesday morning, at about 01:30am.

"It is alleged that  two police officers were on duty patrolling when they spotted a white Toyota bakkie with its park lights on near one of the shops in Cala," described police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni. 

"On enquiring, the police were welcomed with bullets shots to their direction.

"During that process, a group of men coming from inside the shop also joined in the fire fight and shot at the police."

She said that one police officer, who was in the police van was shot and wounded on the right leg.

"The wounded member was taken to Queenstown Hospital where he is receiving medical attention," Capt Mdleleni said.

"He was reported to be in a stable condition."

Cala business burglary under investigation

She said that a case of attack on police and business burglary was opened and is under investigation.

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner-Lt General Liziwe condemned the the attack on police and mobilized the community to fight that attack of on-duty officers as it is equivalent to an attack on the state.
