Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality fast-tracking housing delivery, assures no evictions occurred

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Human Settlements Directorate says that it is fast-tracking housing delivery to local residents with the assistance of National and Provincial Human Settlements departments.

While Westville community is still waiting for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, to engage them over their grievances, the Human Settlements Directorate held an operation to remove illegally-erected and incomplete structures near the Joe Slovo area, in Port Elizabeth, just across the road from Westville.

According to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, the municipality, assisted by other government entities, removed about 300 illegal and incomplete structures.

"The municipality would like to make it clear that there were no evictions done. The were no people staying in the area. It was just incomplete structures,” Mniki said.

"The municipality would like to thank affected residents for their cooperation during this operation.”

He still apologised for the inconvenience caused to motorists using Uitenhage Road for the closure of the road during this operation on Wednesday.

"The municipality calls upon the residents to engage the municipality on issues of land availability."

Mniki also said that the municipality will continue to identify land for residents and for other purposes.

He added that there will be engagements done with the Province and National Human Settlements departments to ensure that local housing delivery is fast tracked.

"The municipality will also improve on communication and engagements on land and housing related matters to keep residents informed of the developments."
