Eastern Cape Dept of Health denies MEC getting new R900k car

Eastern Cape Health MEC, Ms Helen Sauls-August, is not getting a new state vehicle, the Eastern Cape Department of Health said on Thursday.

This follows after the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape claimed that the MEC was getting a brand new R900 000 car, despite her Department only budgeting R325,000 on wheelchairs, hearing aids, and orthotics.

"MEC is currently using the vehicle she used in her previous portfolio of Human Settlements," Eastern Cape Provincial Health spokesman, Lwandile Sicwetsha, said.

"The current amount reflected in the Adjustment budget  is for the state vehicle purchased for the previous MEC last year.

"The invoice for the vehicle in question was submitted this year, hence payment was made this year."

'Former MEC Dr Phumza Dyantyi's vehicle had to be replaced'

Sicwetsha said the Department of Health had to replace from MEC, Dr Phumza Dyantyi’s vehicle last financial year as it had reached its 120,000km limit.

"We wrote to provincial treasury and they eventually issued an instruction that we could purchase the Q7, which we ordered and arrived before the end of the year," he described.

"However, we were not able to make the payment and thus landed up with an accrual.

"We therefore requested a roll over for the funds so that we didnt have to shift funds away from service delivery for something that we had budgeted for in the previous year in line with our request to the treasury, payment was made in June."
