The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old man, Azukisile Sidondi, and a 26-year-old man, Thulani Makuhlwa, to 60 years imprisonment each for rape, house breaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

"It is alleged that the accused went to the homestead of the victims on 12 October 2016, at about 03:00, at Mthuvi Locality, Thaleni Village, Dutywa," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The victims were asleep in their rented room when they were woken up by the accused, who demanded cellphones, money and they both raped the women."

He said that a case of rape was opened at Dutywa Police Station.

Sentences against Dutywa men welcomed

"The case was later handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)."

Makuhlwa and Sidondi were later traced and arrested.

Butterworth SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the stiff sentences handed to the accused as it will serve as a lesson to the cruel men who are raping women and children.
