Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Babalo Madikizela, is expected to meet local co-operatives in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, on Tuesday.

"Job opportunities have been created for 53 community members in Walmer Township through a housing project that not only focuses on building of houses but also has developed the community through co-operatives.

"Six co-operatives benefiting 53 members of the community including women and youth of Walmer, have been formed and received accredited training with transfer of skills for job creation," said Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements spokesperson, Phiwokuhle Soga.

"They form part of the Walmer Gqebera Enhanced Peoples Housing Process (EPHP), a project mainly driven by the community to improve their living conditions.

"A total of R75 602 386, 83 has been allocated for the whole project to build for 500 families. The project is divided into phases with 260 units planned to be completed by 31 March 2019."

Soga said that the project has so far completed 10 units, some of which the MEC will also handover to shack dwellers in Walmer.

"EPHP project allows for the beneficiaries to choose what type of houses they want and also decide on the Service Provider.

"They form Community Based Organisation that is mentored by their chosen Community Resourced Organisation for technical and financial skills, where they are trained and get empowerment for future businesses after the project is complete," Soga said.

"The training they have received so far includes brick laying, plastering, book keeping, assistance in business registration, opening of business accounts and tax training. Practical training will commence next year.

"Projects in the province have won the Best EPHP in the country for 4 consecutive years at the National Govan Mbeki Awards since 2015. The Walmer Gqebera project will also be used as a blueprint for EPHP in the country."
