The Tsomo Regional Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old man, Mthandazo Bambiso, to 18 years imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend.

"It is alleged that the accused went to Ngqamakhwe Police Station to report that his girlfriend was murdered," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

The murder was committed on the 3rd of February 2016, at about 20h00, at the home of the accused at Mzantsi Locality, Sokapase Village, Ngqamakhwe.

"Ngqamakhwe police visited the scene at the home of the accused at Mzantsi Locality, Sokapase Village, Ngqamakhwe."

Captain Manatha said that, however, police became suspicious that the accused was not being honest.

"He was questioned and the investigation led to his arrest."

Capt Manatha said that police also found some blood stains in the underwear of the suspect.

"He finally confessed that he murdered his girlfriend as they were the only two people at the home of the accused. The motive behind the murder was jealousy," he added.

"The deceased, originally from Cofimvaba, was identified as 21-year-old Zanele Mayila."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the hefty sentence imposed to the accused.

He is hoping that the sentence will send a strong message to other men not to abuse their partners and women in general.
