Mthatha man busted with unlicensed rifle and ammo on New Year's Day

A 30-year-old Mthatha man is expected in court on Wednesday after he was arrested by local police for illegal firearm and ammunition possession.

According to police police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena, Mthatha police arrested the 30-year-old man during operation Festive Season at Lindile locality at about 01h30 on New Year's Day.

"Members followed an information that led to the suspect who was found at a local tavern in possession of a Calibre 22 Long Rifle with eight rounds of ammunition."

Mthatha man expected in court

She said that the suspect will appear before Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Wednesday facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

"We will send this firearm to ballistic and we may solve murder case/s if not attempted murder case/s. You have saved many lives by confiscating it. I applaud you," added Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier Asogran Naidoo.
