East London police stumble upon huge stash of stolen ammunition

During an operation conducted by the East London K9 together with Provincial PES at Mdantsane and East London Clusters, 762 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.

"Police stumbled upon the live ammunition buried in the ground in Kimberly Street in the CBD, whilst members were trying to pursue alleged drug dealers," said polie spokesperson, Captain Hazel Mqala.

"Amongst the rounds, a firearm licence was recovered."

She said that during a preliminary investigation, the owner was traced, who alleged that several of his firearms and a substantial amount of ammunition was stolen during a house breaking incident that took place in November 2016.

"One of his firearms has since been recovered in Cambridge by the SAPS. No arrests have been made."

She said that as the team continued with their operation, two males, aged 35 and 39 years of age, were arrested in terms of the Immigration Act.
