Gelvandale man hands himself in after alleged murder, residents run amok
A 58-year-old alleged murder suspect handed himself over to Gelvandale police soon after a 29-year-old Helenvale man was stabbed to death.
According to police information, on Monday, at about 20:00, Glendon Jansen went to the suspect’s house in Old Standford Road, Port Elizabeth, and confronted him.
"Reason for the confrontation is yet to be determined," said police spookesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.
"A physical altercation broke out and the suspect was assaulted with a baseball bat. It is further alleged that the suspect pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Jansen twice (in the back and chest). He succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
"The suspect handed himself over to police."
Residents damaged Gelvandale man's home
She said that while police were detaining the suspect, it is further alleged that Jansen’s friends went to his house and damaged it by breaking the windows etc.
"The suspect’s bakkie was also set alight," Col Naidu said.
"A 35-year-old male was arrested and detained on a charge of malicious damage to property and Public Violence."
She said that he will appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The murder suspect is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court soon.
