Elderly man shot and killed at Seafield identified, search for killer continues

Police at Seafield, near Port Alfred, have released the name of the elderly man, who was shot and killed by an unknown assailant through the window of his bedroom on Monday night.

"The victim has been identified as 79-year-old Pieter De Coning," said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She said that detectives from Seafield SAPS are still seeking the assistance of the community in tracking down those responsible for De Coning's murder.

"According to the severely traumatised spouse of the deceased, at around 23:30 on Monday night, she saw someone at the window and alerted her sleeping husband," described Captain Govender.

"As he tried to get off the bed, the suspect, who was standing at the bedroom window, stuck his body through the window and shot the victim.

"He then fled the scene."

She said that during the preliminary investigation, forensic experts collected an item of clothing, possibly belonging to the suspect.

Police appeal for leads in arresting suspects in murder of Seafield man

Port Alfred SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Morgan Govender, expressed his shock at this incident.

"We are deeply shocked by this incident and extend our condolences to the family and friends of the victim. We make an appeal to the community to assist the SAPS with their investigation,” he said.

No arrests have been made and an urgent appeal is made to any person with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Warrant Officer Yeza Tyala at Seafield SAPS on 082 442 3814, during office hours on 046 675 1113 or contact the Crime Stop number on 086 001 0111.
