Man and his 7-month-old baby killed in Veeplaas, wife escaped unhurt

A 40-year-old father and his seven-month-old baby have been murdered in a hit-style murder on Wednesday night in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth.

"The man, his 32-year-old wife and the 7-month-old baby were sleeping in the same bed in their home in Mabaso Street, Veeplaas," said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"At about 22:20, the door to their home was kicked open by two suspects.

"One of the suspects fired several shots towards the 40-year-old father, Siyabulela Vena, and his 7-month-old daughter, Asesakhe Vena."

He said that both were wounded several times and passed away on the scene.

"The 32-year-old mother saught cover under the blankets when the shooting started and was unharmed during the incident."

Capt Beetge said that the two suspects fled the scene without taking any valuables.

"The motive for the murders are therefore still unclear, but detectives will be investigating in all possible avenues."

Motherwell SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, expressed that the SAPS management is appalled by this murder of this child.

"The SAPS strongly condemns the killing of children. The protection of our children has a nationwide focus and is a priority for the SAPS. We are calling on our community to come forward with information that could assist with the identification of the motive and suspects involved in this double murder," he said.
