Bethelsdorp man expected in court after allegedly fatally stabbing girlfriend

Port Elizabeth - A Port Elizabeth man is expected in court on Tuesday following an incident in which he fatally stabbed his girlfriend over the weekend. 

"The Bethelsdorp members arrested a 51-year-old suspect on charges of murder on Sunday evening after he allegedly assaulted and stabbed his girlfriend," described police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"The 45-year-old Nomzama Kokowa from Palmar Street in Booysen Park passed away on the scene due to her injuries."

Capt Janse Van Rensburg said that it is alleged that Kokowa and her boyfriend was walking in Palmar street, Phola Park on Saturday, at approximately 20:20.

"According to witnesses, they were joyful, but then her boyfriend pulled out a knife and stabbed her and assaulted her with a glass bottle," she said.

Bethelsdorp went into hiding after fatal stabbing

Kokowa sustained a stab wound in the neck and on the upper body.

"The suspect fled on foot and went into hiding from the police.

"On Sunday, just after 01:35, he was arrested by Bethelsdorp police officers in Polar Park after they received information on his whereabouts," Capt Janse Van Rensburg said.

"The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of murder."
