A  24-year-old Ngqamakhwe man is again expected in court on Monday next week after he was arrested by local detectives for the alleged rape and murder of an 84-year-old woman.

"It is alleged that the 24-year-old forced the door at the home of the deceased open on the 2nd of May 2017, at about 12am, at Komkhulu Location, Dudumashe Village, Ngqamakhwe," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The accused is alleged to  have accosted the victim and raped her. The deceased was also allegedly strangled to death after being raped."

The deceased, who has been identified as Nomamerika Tyokolo, aged 84, was staying alone at her homestead.

"The accused was traced and arrested Friday during the night at Matolweni Village, Tsomo.

"The accused appeared before the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday," said Captain Manatha.

"He was not asked to plead and his case was postponed to next Monday for further investigation. The accused will be identified once he has pleaded to the charge of rape."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey condemned the attack on elderly women.

He praised the Ngqamakhwe Police detectives for their swift actions in tracing and arresting the accused and appealed to elderly people not to stay alone as they are soft targets for criminals.
