Suspect tried to flee from Kwazakele police patrol

Port Elizabeth - Members of the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad arrested a 36-year-old suspect during the early hours of Thursday morning in Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth, in possession of a prohibited firearm.

"It is alleged that at about 01:45 on Thursday, while members were patrolling in Kwazakele, they noticed a suspicious VW Polo with three occupants in Gege Street," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The vehicle was stopped and the males were ordered out of the vehicle.

"One male attempted to run but was immediately apprehended."

Col Naidu said that a 9mm pistol and magazine was confiscated from his waist.

"On further searching the suspect, a box of 9mm ammunition (46 rounds) was found in his tracksuit pocket," she added.

"He was arrested and detained for possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition."

Kwazakele expected in court soon for firearm and ammo possession

Col Naidu said that a cellphone was also confiscated during the operation.

"He is expected to appear in court soon."

Motherwell Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Dawie Rabie, commended the police officers for the arrest.

"Firearms are commonly used in the commission of trio crimes and other serious and violent crimes. Concerted efforts are made by our members to remove illegal firearms from society," he described.
