Haval H1 review: 'The Haval H1 is an excellent city runabout'

Haval H1 review South Africa

Port Elizabeth - I have raved about Haval’s vehicles since I first test drove the Haval H2. I have now driven the H6 and the H9 and both were outstanding.

The attention to detail, ergonomics, drive style, comfort and performance were class leading, not to mention incredible value for money.

A few weeks back I had the opportunity to try out the H1. This vehicle was previously known as the GWM M4 but has since been rebranded as the Haval H1. Haval is a Chinese manufacturer that specialises in SUV and is in fact the largest supplier of SUV’s in China.

The Haval H1 is actually a Crossover and not an SUV. As such it is better suited to an urban environment and is ideally suited as a Mom’s Taxi. The alloy rims, sporty grill and head lights and the roof rails give the H1 a robust look.

Haval H1 Interior

I found the interior to be spacious and packed with features. In fact there is no other vehicle in its class or price range that that can compete in these categories.

This incredibly priced vehicle comes standard with cruise control, power steering, electric windows, mirrors and air-conditioning. The dashboard is sophisticated and offers Radio/MP3/CD playback, Bluetooth cell or MP3 connectivity and USB ports.

The radio, call connectivity and cruise control can all be managed from the steering wheel.

The cloth seats are very comfortable and the seating is relatively high offering the driver a good view of the surroundings.

Haval H1 specs and performance

The 1,5 VVT-i manual petrol engine delivers 69.3 kW and 130 Nm of torque. This is more than sufficient to get around town, whether on the freeway or the back streets.

The front wheel drive, 5 speed manual gearbox, high seating and good ergonomics make this vehicle a very easy drive.

The car has disk brakes all around, Dual SRS front airbags, ABS with EBD brakes and rear-park assist amongst other standard safety features.

The boot is big enough to fit school sports bags or all the paraphernalia for a beach outing.

If I were in the market for an inexpensive city run about then this would be my vehicle of choice. The fact that it comes with a 5 year/ 100 000km warrant, 3 year/45 000km service plan and 5 years of road side assistance gives me added peace of mind.

Running costs are also very reasonable with fuel consumption of 7.3l per 100km and service intervals of 15 000km. The Haval H1 will not break the bank when it comes to buying, running or insurance costs.

Do yourself a favour and visit Haval’s show room at 770 Govan Mbeki Ave, North End, Port Elizabeth, call them on 041 402 9000 to book a test drive or enquire online.
