Local students receive life lessons at #MentortheBoys Workshop

Port Elizabeth – Grade 11 boys in Nelson Mandela Bay received some valuable life lessons and things to think about at the annual #MentortheBoys Workshop that took place in April. Ten boys across ten different schools in the Metro were chosen and spent the day receiving insight and inspiration.

This annual workshop is accomplished thanks to the partnerships of Brown’s PR, Vodacom and the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. The high schools involved this year include Alexander Road High, Andrew Rabie, Booysen Park, Cillie, Douglas Mbopa, Linkside High, Newell High, Otto du Plessis, the United Through Sport programme and Woolhope.

The workshop took place at the Helenic Hall in Parsons Hill. The students were accompanied by a teacher from each of their schools; they were then placed at separate tables so that there was a student from each school at one table. At each table was a facilitator from Varsity College to encourage conversation and sharing of experiences.

Speakers share their life experiences with Grade 11 boys

Various speakers attended the workshop in the hopes to share some of their wisdom and life experience in order to help guide these young men to brighter futures. Speakers from Atlas Security, Mr PE UberMANn, BLC Attorneys, Magnetic Storm and Vodacom were in attendance.

Monty Montgomery and Bernadette Naude from Atlas Security spoke about the importance of keeping oneself safe, and not taking risks that could endanger your life.

“Monty and I have always been passionate about the safety of young people and as we are going into the big wild world where you will study and enter society, you need to realise how to take care of your own personal safety,” said Bernadette.

Various topics were covered as the speakers told their stories to the young men in the room, from career choices to the Do’s and Don’ts of social media, topics that might influence their futures as they get ready to leave school.
