The new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatch remains true to its awesome pedigree

Port Elizabeth - Corolla is Latin for “small crown” and a more aptly named car you will not find. The Toyota Corolla has been king of the automobile world for three human generations and twelve Toyota generations.

First launched in 1966 it was the top-selling car worldwide just a few years later and remains one of the planets top-selling cars today.

I recently had the pleasure of collecting the new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatch from Algoa Toyota in Port Elizabeth. In recent years Toyota has moved from their conservative yet functional look into a realm of creativity and produced some really eye-catching designs.

The latest Toyota Corolla hatchback is really attractive and also a lot bigger than its predecessor. Sit behind the wheel and you feel more like you are in a Lexus than a Toyota as the creative flair has been carried through to the interior too.

I test drove the Corolla Hatch 1.2T XS with a manual gear shift. There is also the automatic transmission Corolla Hatch 1.2T XS CVT and the Corolla Hatch 1.2T XR CVT.

Performance of the Toyota Corolla Hatch

The 1.2-litre turbo -petrol engine produces 85 kW and 185 Nm of torque. I found this to be more than sufficient to zip around town and cruise comfortably on the freeway.

Toyota reports that the Corolla Hatch can do zero to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds for the manual and 10.4 seconds for the CVT.

Fuel consumption is claimed to be 6.1 L/100 km. The gearbox is either a 6-speed manual or a 10-step CVT.  Service intervals are 15 000km.

Overall, the combination of power, fuel efficiency and service intervals means that the Corolla Hatch offers really good value for money.

Toyota Corolla Hatch 2019 interior

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Corolla Hatch. Toyota has always had the edge on ergonomics and has designed dashboards that offer simplicity in functionality. The new Hatch is no different but it comes with added beauty and sophistication.

Apart from what have become standard features on all cars – Bluetooth connectivity, controls on the steering wheel and aircon, you can also expect 16” alloy wheels, LED headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, cruise control and auto dual-zone air-conditioning system. The XR model also comes with leather and suede seat trim.

In the Corolla Hatch, Toyota continues to offer a great car for all purposes. Whether you are looking for a functional repping car or a small family car, the Toyota Corolla Hatch is hard to beat.
