DSRAC sends over 350 learners to represent Eastern Cape at sport championships

Bhisho - The Department of Sport, Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC) has led more than 350 Eastern Cape (EC) learners to participate at the National Schools Sport Winter Championships Winter Games, starting Monday to Friday in Durban.

These future athletes are representing the province of the Eastern Cape, #TeamEC in 7 different sporting codes, namely tennis, rugby, chess, hockey, football, netball and volleyball.

This team constitutes both able bodied and physically challenged athletes.

The annual South African Schools National Championships culminates from a controlled league programme where various school learners competed against each other and progress from local, circuit, district and provincial levels therefore qualifying to attend the Championships.

Participants in these Championships emanates from both primary and secondary schools, including the disabled learners.

MEC Fezeka Bayeni has a keen interest in the development of school sport programme.

“Schools Sport remains the 'Bedrock for Sport Development' and as such, amongst all the programmes, the Department is mandated to deliver services which are biased towards school sport.

"The Eastern Cape will continue to make an indelible mark in the national school sport championships: winter games, summer games and autumn games,” stated MEC Bayeni.

Furthermore, MEC Bayeni added that “When you left your respective Districts to KZN to participate in those prestigious winter games, you took with you the aspirations and pride of the people of the Eastern Cape.

"When you, therefore, wear your provincial sporting colours know that you are us and we are you and as a Home of Legends, the sport loving people of the Province we wish you very good success, bring those medals.”
