East London woman arrested for allegedly abandoning her four kids

East London - A 29-year-old Mdantsane woman is expected in court after she was arrested on Monday by East London police for child neglect, after leaving her four kids alone as she visited her boyfriend.

"It is alleged that she left the kids on Sunday with no food to eat," said police spokesperson, Captain Nkosikho Mzuku.

"The ages of the children are 4, 6, 8 and 9 years old respectively.

"The two of them, aged eight and nine years old, could not attend school as they were babysitting their four-year-old sibling."

Capt Mzuku said that members of the community intervened and reported the matter to the authorities (Social workers), a child neglect case was opened at Mdantsane police station.

"The suspect was arrested for child neglect and is expected to appear soon in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court once charged."

Mdantsane SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Henry Vos, has this to say; "Myself and my team, we undertake to keep the commitment we made in our code of conduct by making sure that we shall protect the citizens of this country. I would like to further urge the parents to make sure that children are not left unattended."
