The George Municipality and local schools celebrated Arbour Week with the planting of 25 trees, sponsored by Aurecon, at the York Street Cemetery on Thursday.

Environmental Services Portfolio Councillor Marlene Barnardt thanked Heidedal, Hibernia, Parkdene and Holy Cross Primary Schools for participating in the event and for planting trees at their schools and communities.

“Trees leave a positive legacy. These school children’s descendants can potentially benefit from the trees they plant here and in their communities.”

Cllr Barnardt appealed to communities to take ownership of trees planted in their neighbourhoods.

“I appeal to everyone to take care of the trees where they live and work, whether the trees are old, young, on private property or in public spaces. Stop people from vandalising or stealing trees, and help us water and protect them from the elements. Caring for a tree is an investment in the future,” she said.

The municipality intends planting more trees at schools across town and welcomes any donations of trees to supplement this project. Contact parks@george.org.za for details on how to donate a tree.

Larger trees are particularly welcome as it improves their chances of survival against challenges such as theft, vandalism and harsh weather.
