25-year-old arrested and two firearms confiscated after robbery in Kwadwesi

A 25-year-old armed robbery suspect could not escape Port Elizabeth police officers, who were hot on his heels following a robbery incident in the Govan Mbeki locality of Kwadwesi, Port Elizabeth, on Wednesday morning.

"At 07:45, a 30-year-old male was gun pointed by three armed suspects in Boesak Street, Govan Mbeki. They demanded his money and then fled the scene in their black Toyota Avanza they were using," described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"At 09:00, the vehicle was spotted driving in Mbeki Avenue, Govan Mbeki by Public Order Police Service (POPS) members."

He said that on getting closer to the black Avanza, two suspects alighted from the vehicle and fired several shots at the police vehicle.

"The suspects then dropped one of their firearms before fleeing again in their vehicle into a side street.

"Some of the POPS members remained at the site where the firearm was dropped while the rest followed the Avanza speeding away," Capt Beetge added.

"In Cele Street, one of the suspects jumped out of the Avanza and ran in between the houses. He hid his firearm in the yard of one of the houses before attempting to hide in a shack behind another house."

Accomplices managed to evade arrest

The remaining three suspects managed to evade arrest by driving through an opening in the fence next to the R75 (Uitenhage Road) and fled from police.

"The hiding 25-year-old suspect was found and arrested by the POPS members and his firearm discovered and confiscated."

He will be appearing before the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Friday to face charges of attempted murder as well as illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm.

"Charges of robbery could be added once further invesigation also links him to the robbery."

Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, said "Committing crime using fire arms remains a priority for SAPS. We will continue to flush criminals and illegal fire arms out of our communities.

"We will also utilise members of the SAPS National Intervention Unit to assist to locate and arrest the rest of these suspects that fled the scene after shooting at our police members. These suspects needs to be arrested to ensure the safety of our community."
