2019 GWM Steed 6 bakkie – bold, sophisticated and comfortable!

Writing this review, I vividly recalled a day when a GWM Steed 6, in the face of our best efforts, left us mouths gapping on the steep climb that is Mount Road, in Port Elizabeth - despite it seemingly having a bigger load. “You know many people under-estimated these GWM Steed bakkies when they first landed in South Africa,” my friend said resigning, “One day, if you ever want to spoil me, get me a GWM bakkie!”

Indeed the new GWM Steed 6 has been making impressions everywhere. This GWM bakkie has a bold, louvred grille and accentuated wheel arches that give it a forceful presence. Neatly integrated LED strips, high-intensity projector-style headlamps and a finely-sculpted lower airdam that incorporates an SUV-like skid plate are also hard to miss on the front.

The Steed 6 is arguably one of the biggest bakkies on South African roads. This generous size – thanks to an especially long wheelbase, means the Steed 6 offers stretch-out rear legroom.

All Steed 6 models also boast comprehensive colour coding, 16-inch alloy wheels and front and rear fog lamps. Flagship Xscape variants further add factory-fit side steps, roof rails and a rear roll bar.

GWM Steed 6 2019 review

I chatted to well-known businessman, Mike Zoetmulder, who runs Zsports Events NPC and owns a 2019 GWM Steed 6 2.0litre, about his experience with the bakkie over the past months.

“What I love about the Steed 6 is the ease of driving, fuel economy and the luxury included for the price,” describes Zoetmulder.

The GWM Steed 6 is the company’s flagship leisure double-cab and is designed and packaged to appeal to those customers, who want only the best - the most advanced safety features, the most user-friendly luxuries, power and economy in equal measure and design that forces you to look... and look again!

When you step into the bakkie, you are greeted with a cabin that would do a top-notch luxury SUV proud. The facia design is European, with two deep-set analogue instrumentation gauges flanking a comprehensive trip computer.

Unique to this segment is the leather-covering of the instrumentation binnacle, a detailed touch that reinforces the Steed 6's upmarket intentions. Other examples of this premium focus include a leather-wrapped, four-spoke multi-function steering wheel and piano-black trim on the facia.

Two trim levels are offered, with the SX derivatives boasting such items as climate control, radio/CD with Bluetooth and height-adjustable driver's seat. Flagship Xscape variants offer a full-house package that includes leather upholstery, electric driver seat adjustment, cruise control and auto lights/wipers.

Zoetmulder notes; “It has been great vehicle experience - very easy to drive. It’s also very comfortable off-road.”

He adds; “The load capacity is 750kg and it handles well even when fully-loaded.”

This because the Steed 6 is powered by GWM's 2,0-litre VGT engine that has received widespread acclaim. This direct-injection, variable geometry turbo engine delivers 105 kW and a meaty 305 Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is fitted. This engine uses 8,8 L/100 km in the combined fuel cycle.

All SX-badged derivatives feature a rear differential lock.

GWM Steed 6 2019 safety features

Safety has also been top of mind when they designed the Steed 6. This bakkie offers the most comprehensive safety package that has ever been offered on a GWM product in South Africa.

The flagship Xscape derivatives boast sophisticated Bosch ESC (electronic stability control), tyre pressure monitoring and no fewer than six airbags (dual front, side & curtain). All Steed 6's are equipped with Isofix rear child seat anchors. Front and rear fog lamps are fitted to all models, as are eye-catching LED driving lamps.

To make sure your pride and joy doesn't find a new owner without your consent, central locking and an immobiliser are standard fitments.

I asked Zoetmulder if he would recommend the Steed 6 to another driver.

“ABSOLUTELY – I have been a GWM driver for the past six years and love the brand,” he tells me.

“The service that I have received from their dealership in Port Elizabeth over the years has also been first-class.”
