Port Elizabeth67 SUBZ starter packs, which contained one panty, three washable pads, three sealable bags and one drawstring bag were recently handed over to Grade 6 and 7 female learners at Adolph Schauder Primary School by The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth students and staff.

Said Jaci Howell Student Relations Manager, The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth: “So many young girls miss school during menstruation because they do not have access to sanitary wear.

"Giving a young girl one pack of traditional sanitary towels will only assist her for one month. We decided to make a sustainable difference by giving the Grade 6 and 7’s of Adolph Schauder Primary School each a SUBZ starter sanitary pack of washable reusable sanitary towels.

"Looked after correctly they can last for 5 years. This way we were able to make a sustainable difference”.

Guest speaker Jenna Thomson from The Girls Guide By Jenna spoke to female learners of the Adolph Schauder Primary School about how to empower themselves.

The Girls Guide By Jenna is a platform where girls are empowered with life skills (relationships, personal hygiene, taking pride in one’s appearance, academic excellence, public speaking) and soft skills (good communication, how to operate in a team, basic good manners, resilience and perseverance).

SUBZ Pants and Pads was established in August 2010 and has, since then, made and distributed more than 100 000 SUBZ washable, reusable sanitary pad packs throughout South Africa.
