Woman arrested in Qumbu with two illegal rifles and ammunition

Qumbu - In an effort to eradicate proliferation of illegal firearms, Qumbu Vispol members and TRT followed a positive information that led to the arrest of a 31-year-old woman after her rented room was searched and two rifles - an AK47 with 13 rounds and an UMP rifle with 23 rounds were seized at Qumbu Village on Tuesday, at about 00h30.

"The operation proceeded to Mary's mini location where a 27 year old man was arrested after he was found in possession of a .38 revolver with six rounds," said police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena.

"Another 39-year-old man was also arrested at the same locality after he was found in possession of a Revolver with 23 rounds."

All the suspects will appear before the Qumbu Magistrate's Court soon.

"The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they cannot be linked to other crimes and the suspects profiled."

Meanwhile, Capt Koena said that a 30-year-old foreign national was arrested for possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol (serial numbers erased) with 12 rounds at Nqwathi locality on Monday, at about 19h00.

He will also appear before the Bityi Periodical Court soon.

SAPS District Commissioner, Major General David Kanuka, lauded the operators. He said; "Let's collect these firearms and save innocent lives."
