Khanya Leshabela Looking To Make Leicester Breakthrough

With the English Premier League finally awakening from its enforced slumber, the focus returns to the hotly contested race for the Champions League places and it is a race that Leicester City will be confident of going onto win.

At the start of the campaign and when pundits were making their Premier League picks for the season, Leicester did not feature in any predictions regarding a top-four finish and it is fair to say that they have been this year’s surprise act within English football.

Credit must go to Brendan Rodgers and since his installation as manager in 2019, the Foxes have found their hunger and they’ve done so with a group of players that is young but already extremely talented.

The blend of youth and experience within the King Power Stadium has served Leicester well and with senior pro’s such as Jamie Vardy and Wes Morgan able to take the like of Harvey Barnes and James Madison under their wings, it is a blend that is currently serving them well.

While there is also a heavy focus on academy talents and with England Under-21 international Hamza Choudhury breaking through into the first team ranks and making a central midfield berth his own, another young talent will soon be hoping to achieve something similar.

The talent in question is none other than South Africa’s very own Khanya Leshabela and although he is yet to make a Premier League bow for Leicester, there is a sense that his debut will not be all that far away.

While if Leicester can wrap up a top-four finish with a handful of league outings to spare and subsequently have nothing to play for, it could well be that Leshabela is then afforded such a special opportunity before the season ends.

Due to the three-month hiatus that the Premier League was forced to undertake, there are questions regarding player fitness and because of that, squad depth may be one of the key advantages over the next few weeks.

While depth is certainly something that Leicester can call upon and although Leshabela does have several midfield options blocking his path to the first team squad, there is certainly confidence in his ability.

Confidence that has been matched by the Leicester board back in January 2019 and with the South African starlet signing a new long-term deal with the club, his future looks set to be connected to the East Midlands outfit.

While although he is yet to have tasted a Premier League bow, Leshabela had made it as far as the substitutes bench in another competition and even though he was not afforded a minute in the tie against Southampton, he does at least have experience of what a Carabao Cup evening looks like.

That experience will set him in good stead and just being able to receive the exposure of a top level matchday, is not something that will be lost on one of Leicester’s hottest prospects and it will not be long before his talents are regularly on display.

Talents that see the 20-year-old being most comfortable in a central midfield role and with the ability to get forward and link up with play in the final third, this versatility can also see him utilised in a more attacking berth as well.

In addition to this, Leshabela has been an integral part of Leicester’s Premier League 2 campaign this season and with 18 appearances to his name in the competition, he has provided a single goal from central midfield.

While with the success and reputation of Leicester’s academy, they have also been invited into this season’s EFL trophy and although the side did not make as much progress as they hoped, the teenager played a pivotal part in their run to the Quarter-finals.

With the transfer market set to be a lot different this summer, the propensity for loan deals will likely increase and it could well mean that Leshabela is trusted with some more regular minutes elsewhere.

That’s not to say his time at Leicester is coming to an end, if anything far from it. It’s more a solution regarding the acceleration of his career progress and should a loan move be facilitated; he will only return to the King Power even stronger and eventually become a real asset to the Foxes.
