34th annual Volkswagen Rally heading to Eastern Cape

The 34th Volkswagen Rally will take place on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of July in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage vicinity.

This will be round four of the national rally championship season for 2016, but will also in addition, include a pool of regional competitors.

This annual Volkswagen Rally calendar remains the highlight for Eastern Cape in the motorsport calendar. The 2016 event consists of 12 stages of competition taking place over two days, with a total distance of almost 190km set to be covered.

“The Volkswagen Rally covers a variety of terrain types. It isn’t going to be an easy rally, but it certainly is going to be interesting and the teams will know they’ve just finished a round of the national championship by the time they are done,” said route directors Joe and Rikus Fourie in a statement.

The start of the rally will traditionally begin at the Uitenhage Auto Pavilion, where fans can initially meet the teams and see the cars up close before the action takes off.

This will take place on Friday, July 15th, at 13:45 where competitors will then head to stage one at Jachtvlakte which will begin at 13:55. The overnight closed park for the event will be held at Bay West Mall, where the Volkswagen Rally will also restart on Saturday morning, July 16th.

“We’ve tried to make the Volkswagen Rally an easy one for the spectators to follow and also keep the stages close to areas where rally fans can access good vantage points – as well as using areas where the rally cars will run multiple times,” said Fourie.

Volkswagen Rally spectator guides will be available online and at Volkswagen dealerships in the Metropolitan area before the event initially gets underway. Spectator guides will also feature at the Auto Pavilion when the rally begins on the Friday.
