Mount Road police have arrested two men on a charge of theft after an armed robbery in Sydenham on Friday morning.

Speaking in a statement, police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said that four men, pretending to be customers, entered a shop in Uitenhage Road shortly after 09h15 at which point one of the suspects threatened the cashier with a firearm.

Janse Van Rensburg said that the suspects fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money in the direction of Kempston Road having taken the cashier to the back of the office. He was found to be unharmed.

One of the suspects (24) was later discovered hiding in a Sydenham residential yard after a tip-off, while the second (21) was spotted by members of the Mount Road Crime Prevention Unit and arrested. The remaining two are still on free foot. Police also recovered the money stolen at the scene.
