A 41-year-old male is in serious condition in hospital after he was shot several times in what appears to be an attempted robbery.

"This followed after a private contractor were busy delivering furniture at 09:00 on Wednesday at a house in Ngwendu Street, Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth, using a white Nissan bakkie and trailer filled with new furniture," described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"The contractors, three males and two females, were busy at the home delivering the furniture, when about five suspects approached them.'

He said that the 32-year-old house owner, as well as his 48-year-old neighbour, were helping to carry a couch into the house, while the 41-year-old Ernest Melville stood watch as guard in the yard.

"According to the house owner, when the suspects approached, he dropped the couch and ran into the house. He then heard several shots being fired," Capt Beetge said.

"On his return to the yard, he found Mr Melville wounded and lying at the gate. His 48-year-old neighbour that was allegedly stabbed in his arm and hand."

He added that the suspected robbers were nowhere to be seen and nothing was taken by them.

"Paramedics treated the victims and took them to Livingstone Hospital."
