64-year-old Tshambo man handed life sentence for raping 12-year-old

A 64-year-old man, Mpintsoli Kunjana, was handed a life sentence after being convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl by the Zwelitsha Regional Court, outside King Williams Town.

"This conviction follows after the Mpintsoli who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl from October 2016, who was his neighbour their village at Tshambo, outside King Williams Town," described police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.  

"The incidents, which took place from October 2016 till December 2016, were witnessed by a community member. A relative reported the incident to the local police station and he was immediately arrested."

During his bail application, in March 2017, the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Vuyo Landingwe, successfully opposed bail and the accused remained in custody until his trial.

"In October 2018, the accused stood trial in the Zwelitsha Regional Court after several appearances.

"On the 25 October 2018, he was found guilty of two counts of rape, and on the 26 October 2018, he was sentenced two life imprisonment which will run concurrently," Capt Mawisa said.

Another man handed a life sentence for rape

In a separate incident, a 49-year-old man, Sonwabo Jelman, was also sentenced to life imprisonment for rape at the Zwelitsha Regional Court on 19 October 2018.

"Sonwabo Jelman sexually assaulted a 19-year-old girl at Peelton Location outside King Williams Town from 2014," Capt Mawisa said.

"The case was reported in July 2016. He was immediately arrested and appeared at Court on 29 July 2016."

Again, the Investigating Officer Constable Ntsikelelo Mbokoto successfully opposed bail and the suspect was remanded in custody.

"In November 2016, the case was transferred to Zwelitsha Regional Court where he appeared several times. 

"On 18 July 2018, the suspect was found guilty for five counts of rape," she said.

"On 17 October 2018 ,he was sentenced to four life imprisonment plus 15 years for rape. The sentences will run concurrently."

The Commander for King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zitulele Mahlambeni, has welcomed the convictions and he also extended his appreciation to the Investigating Officers and the justice system for a job well done.

"These sentences will definitely send the message that the law will deal harshly with perpetrators of crime," he added.
