8-year-old girl drowns during church outing in Hermanus

Police in Hermanus have opened an inquest docket after an 8-year-old girl drowned at a local lagoon during a church outing over the weekend.

According to Deon Langenhoven, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRIHermanus station commander, at 11h08, on Saturday, the NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Kleinmond Lagoon.

"While preparing to send sea rescue craft and crew it was confirmed by Police that an 8-year-old female, reportedly at the lagoon with a church group was out of the water and ERM ambulance services paramedics had exhausted all CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts and the child was declared deceased," he described.

"The body of the child was taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.

"Condolences are conveyed to family and friends."
