A 20-year-old alleged abalone poacher nabbed by Port Elizabeth police

A 20-year-old alleged abalone poacher was busted by Port Elizabeth police in the early hours of Tuesday in possession of 50kgs of abalone worth around R50 000 on the street after police acted on a tip-off.

"The over exploitation of abalone from the ocean poses a serious threat to the extinction of this mollusc and the protection of this species from illegal poachers rest on the duty of the SAPS," explained police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She said that efforts by the SAPS to ensure that  the endangered marine life is protected, members of the Port Elizabeth K9 unit  and Marine Coastal arrested the 20-year-old suspect during the early hours of Tuesday.

"Information was received about illegal poaching and a stakeout was conducted.

"At about 02:00 on Tuesday morning, a suspect emerged from bushes  in Marine Drive, Port Elizabeth," described Col Naidu.

"On searching his bag, 243 units of abalone (50kg’s) was seized. The estimated street value is  R50 000." 

She said that the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
