A clarion call to fathers at annual Famhealth Father’s Day Breakfast

Port Elizabeth - Fathers from far and wide gathered last week at the annual Famhealth Father’s Day Breakfast Celebration hosted by Famhealth Medipark in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth.

The Father’s Day celebration was the initiative of Dr Jeff Govender, founder and owner of the Famhealth centre, with the sole aim to encourage and inspire Dads across the city.

“The first event started in 2009 and has grown from strength to strength each year with industry leaders coming on board to support this initiative”, said Dr Govender.

The Famhealth centre continues to break down barriers within the Northern Areas with on-going community engagement projects. Read more

Many households across the world today functions without a father and in some instances fathers are present but fail to fulfil their role as primary caretakers and leaders of their homes.

As such, mothers and other public servants like teachers and family members have to stand in for absent fathers.

Fathers have a big role to play in a child's life. They have a massive influence over their child’s emotional well-being and helps them find their moral compass.

“Fathers are the modern day custodians of rebuilding communities and should take up their role to restore balance and peace with zeal and pride”, said keynote speaker Dr Randall Jonas, Director of the Nelson Mandela University Business School.’

Fathers play a major role in shaping society and we need a new generation of fathers who will take up the leadership mantle and become activists for a caring, stable and happy society.

We need to look no further to see how fathers can change things for the better: in nature, prides, packs and herds are led by strong ‘male -figures’, who intentionally protect, lead, and provide for their families. And this model has worked for years to preserve the livelihood of multiple species. This way they maintain the ecosystem for generations to come.

So why then are we so okay with side stepping these fundamental truths, I wonder…..

Thankfully, there are many good Dads out there and I am sure many can testify of experiencing the power and beauty of an active father.

Though I cannot imagine the demand fathers must endure in today’s fast paced lifestyle, I commend and salute every father for their sacrificial love and hope they will continue to blaze as beacons of light in our home, and communities.
