Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm celebrating 10 years in business

One of the Sundays River Valley's top accommodation establishments, the 4-Star Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm, is celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year.

“Wow, what a blessing in a constantly changing industry - looking at world market recessions’, our country’s previous history and world events that are affecting the travel industry,” described Rod Van Heerden, who owns Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm, with his wife, Magna .

“We’re also very grateful for the opportunity that we have been given by the Potgieter family to start this and be successful in doing this. A lot of people also work with us behind the scenes providing products and services.”

Rod said Addo Dung Beetle actually started with a lunch at the farm owners’ house, where they discussed the possibility to turn his property into a guest farm.

“Being four km from the Addo Elephant National Park, having at that stage only five luxury chalets and being on a working citrus farm called ‘Miskruier’ – meaning Dung Beetle in English.

“Thus, the idea got born to call it Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm - five words that represent the five existing luxury chalets, being in Addo and very close to the main entrance of the Addo Elephant National Park,” he described.

He said that there have been too many highlights at the guest farm to mention “and if we do mention one, we might forget other highlights”.

“Most important to us is that guests visit us from all the other great and beautiful venues in our area and our country. This is such an awesome experience for us and we love to showcase our little paradise to all interested,” Rod described.

About what separates Addo Dung Beetle from its competitors, he said that actually, “some of our competitors have become business friends over the years because all travelers, local and from abroad, have budgets”.

“If we can’t assist them due to their budget constraints or when we are fully-booked, we`ll refer them to our network of business friends in our area, thus securing business for our local area, the Sunday`s River Valley,” Rod said.

About the next ten years, he said; “Hopefully, we will still be blessed to be here and healthy enough to try our utmost best, as always, to showcase our little gem to all visitors  to Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm, Eastern Cape, Malaria Free, South Africa!”
