Africa Day 21km Half Marathon attracts high profile athletes

The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in partnership with the Real Gijimas Athletics Club will host the 21km Half Marathon, which has attracted high profile athletes to be part of the race and the 5km fun run/walk at the Jan Smuts, East London on Sunday.

"Stephanie Smith, a Border –Kei region’s top ultra-marathon runner who won gold at the 2017 Two Oceans Marathon will be one of those high profile athletes to take part in the race, as she will use this race to prepare for the forthcoming comrades marathon," said Spokesperson, Andile Nduna. 

"The Half Marathon Race and the fun run/walk forms part of the build-up activities planned in celebration of Africa Month.

"Africa Month is the period when South Africans, the rest of the Continent and Africans in the diaspora, celebrate what has been achieved and at the same time reflect on challenges that still need to be tackled in order to make Africa a better place to live in."

Nduna said that all those, who are interested to participate are welcomed to do so and must register before 20 May 2018.

"Entry forms are available at the Departments BCM district office, at the Old Elco Building, 14 Commissioner Street in East London," he added.

"A total price money of R100 000 will be won in all categories and other incentives."  

He said that the Provincial Africa Day celebration will be held at the Esplanade open space, opposite Hotel Osner, East London on 25 May 2018.
