Alleged NMU rapist expected in court as DASO pickets

A man, who allegedly raped a 25-year-old Nelson Mandela University female student and stabbed another in an attack at the university's 2nd Avenue Campus computer labs on Monday night is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday. 

The 29-year-old rape suspect was arrested by the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Port Elizabeth, assisted by SAPS Humewood and PE Flying Squad.

According to Port Elizabeth police, the suspect was nabbed along Govan Mbeki Avenue, in Central, Port Elizabeth, in possession of the computer and the cell phone.

He has been charged with rape and robbery.

DASO picket

Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) Eastern Cape Constituency Leader, Hlomela Bucwa MP, is expcted to lead a mass picket outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court following the arrest of the rape suspect.

"We would like to encourage students and members of society to join us as we stand in solidarity with our sisters who were victims of a crime that should never have happened in a free and democratic country," said Bucwa.

"We request that protesters come dressed in black.

"It is now time to stand together and fight for the safety of our campuses regardless of our political differences. DASO will do everything in its power to ensure that our campuses are safe spaces where students can move freely and safely."
