Alleged PE gangster dies following shoot out with police officers

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga, on Monday strongly condemned an attack on two police officers, who were executing their duties on Sunday in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth.

“The SAPS will not be deterred by this attack on its members and will remain resolute in ensuring peace and stability to the citizens of the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth,” said Lt Gen Ntshinga.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, on Sunday, at about 21:45, members from SAPS Bethelsdorp conducted observation duties behind a bus stop in Booysens Park Drive due to recent gang-related shooting incidents, which occurred in the area during the weekend.

"During the stakeout, members heard voices and the sound of cocking of firearms in the nearby open field.  Shots were then fired at the members, who retaliated," she said.

"It was later established that a person was transported to hospital with a gunshot wound. The person died on arrival at the hospital."

Police have since learnt that Augistine Smith (32), affiliated to the Good Fellows gang, sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

"Police are investigating two cases of attempted murder and an inquest docket has been opened in connection with Smith’s death."
